Thurston Gets Call to the Hall

Will Thurston of Moorpark College will be inducted into the California Community College Softball Hall of Fame on May 11.

From 1984-93, Thurston coached the Raiders to nine Western State Conference titles and a 115-12 conference record. He was selected coach of the year in the WSC seven times.

Under Thurston, the Raiders finished third in the state in 1989 and fifth in 1990.

Thurston, former football assistant at Moorpark for 21 years, is the coach of the Moorpark men’s and women’s golf teams.

The induction ceremony will be at Fresno State in conjunction with the state softball championships.

BASKETBALL

* Devin Montgomery, a 6-foot point guard from Moorpark College, has made a commitment to Pepperdine.

Montgomery, who attended Alemany and San Fernando highs, led Moorpark to the state semifinals last season.

Montgomery transferred to Moorpark from Duquesne.

BASEBALL

* Chatsworth High (14-0) is ranked No. 3 in the nation by StudentSports.com in its Fab 50 poll.

Seminole (Fla.) High is ranked No. 1.

VOLLEYBALL

* Outside hitter Maria Abaca of Village Christian High, two-time most valuable player in the Alpha League, has committed to Azusa Pacific.
