Concordia Edges Vanguard in 11th

Dan Candela’s second double of the game drove in Rick Stockton with the game-winning run as Concordia defeated Vanguard, 7-6, in 11 innings in a Golden State Athletic Conference baseball game Thursday at Concordia.
Vanguard (19-16, 8-10) led, 5-0, in the third inning but Concordia (17-18, 8-10) scored four in the bottom of the third. Jim Stolberg drove in two runs with a single and Candela produced two with his first double.
Andy Riddell and Curt Garner each drove in two runs for Vanguard.
In nonconference softball:
Concordia 2-11, Chapman 0-1 (second game 5, mercy)--Aina Kohler’s two-hitter and RBI singles by Christa Rhine and Jana Padilla led Concordia (29-17) in the first game of the doubleheader. Kristen Degree went three for four in the nightcap, and Sarah Kammert and Shelly Kuehnert each had three RBIs.
In nonconference volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, La Verne 0--Jimmy Pelzel had 12 kills, and Todd Steinert had 36 assists and 10 digs for host Irvine (10-12), which won, 30-25, 30-21, 30-24.
