BASEBALL

* One starter was kicked off the team and six players were suspended for rule violations during last week’s Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas, Coach Manny Alvarado of Kennedy said Tuesday.

It was the 10th year Alvarado has taken his team to Las Vegas.

“As of right now, we’re never going back,” he said.

Granada Hills players are facing possible disciplinary action for an incident involving alcohol during their trip to Las Vegas. Eleven players were held out of a game Saturday. A meeting is scheduled today between administrators and parents.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Melissa Astete of Birmingham High, three-time defending City Section champion in the girls’ pole vault, signed a letter of intent with USC on Tuesday.

Astete, runner-up in the state championships last year, also took trips to Stanford, Oregon and Michigan.

She cleared a region record of 13 feet to place first in the Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High on Saturday night and move into a tie for third on the all-time state performer list.

TENNIS

* Cousins Prakash Amritraj of Encino and Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas, and Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks and K.C. Corkery of Manhattan Beach advanced to today’s semifinals of boys’ 18 doubles in the Easter Bowl Super National Spring Championships on Tuesday in Palm Springs.

The Amritrajes defeated Aaron Yovan of Irvine and Daniel Andrus of Fallbrook, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Corkery, defending Southern Section champion from Mira Costa High, and Sheng, Southern Section champion in 1999 and runner-up last year, beat Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks and Rylan Rizza of Rancho Palos Verdes, 6-2, 7-5.

SOCCER

* Erin Misaki, a graduate of Hart High, has been selected to the U.S. women’s under-21 national team that will travel to Guadalajara, Mexico, to play Mexico’s national team May 11 and 13.

ATHLETICS

* Paul Berry has been hired as athletic director at The Master’s College.

Berry has been athletic director at Christian Heritage College in El Cajon since 1991.

Bill Oates, Master’s athletic director since 1993, will remain as men’s basketball coach.
