In the championship game of the Anaheim Lions tournament:

Lakewood 10, Western 2--For the fifth time in the tournament’s 27-year history, a team from outside Orange County was crowned champion.

Lakewood pounded out 14 hits and scored in every inning, winning its 11th game in a row.

“We’re hitting the ball really well and playing great defense,” Lakewood Coach Spud O’Neil said. “We’re just hot.”

Western (12-6-1) took an early lead by scoring twice in the first inning on a two-run single by catcher Rick Devinney. However, the Pioneers lost a chance to do more damage when Chris Jackson grounded into a double play with two on and one out. Lakewood (19-5) turned a walk, hit and error into a run in their half of the first.

The Pioneers missed another opportunity to score in the second inning. With two out, Jordan Clark, Daniel Jorgensen and Gabe Reina hit singles to load the bases, but Kyle Stanley grounded out to second baseman Daniel Steward. The Lancers got run-scoring doubles from Ryan Ferrell and Jay Lopez in their half of the inning to take the lead. They went on to score single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings and got six hits during a four-run fifth.

“They came out swinging and everything they hit seemed to find a hole or an alley,” Western Coach Steve Green said. “They just hit the ball hard and were a better team than us in the tournament.”
