Concordia Basketball Coach Quits

Greg Marshall, the winningest coach in Concordia men’s basketball history, has resigned effective May 5.

Marshall led the Eagles to a 183-166 record in 11 years at Concordia. After guiding Concordia to the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament title in 1999, his team reached the final eight at the NAIA national tournament. Five NAIA All-Americas, and seven NAIA academic All Americas played for Marshall.

* The UC Irvine women’s basketball team has received a commitment from Ashley Biggins, a two-time Times’ Ventura County second-team selection, according to Santa Clara High Athletic Director Lou Cvijanovich. Biggins, a 6-foot-3 center, averaged 19 points for the Saints.

* Cal State Los Angeles has signed two community college players formerly from Tustin High. Santa Ana College guard Terrial Cole has committed to play for the Eagles’ women’s team. Pima, Ariz., guard Rahiem Hobbs committed to play for the men’s team. He averaged 16 points a game.

BASEBALL

UC Irvine has signed three community college baseball players and two high school players, bringing the Anteaters’ 2002 roster to 24 players, Coach John Savage said.

Shortstop B.J. Eucce and left-handed pitcher Jacob Woods, both of Bakersfield College, and right-handed pitcher Sean Tracey of Citrus College signed with Irvine. They were selected to play in the state community college all-star game last season.

Also signed are Oxnard Hueneme High first baseman Jaime Martinez and San Diego Morse High right-handed pitcher Glenn Swanson.

FOOTBALL

Orange Coast offensive lineman Anthony Knutson (Woodbridge) and defensive end Thomas Cornejo have selected four-year colleges, Pirate Coach Mike Taylor said.

Cornejo will play at Chapman and Knutson will play at Liberty University, a Division I-AA program in Lynchburg, Va.

SWIMMING

Michael Shapiro of Irvine High has committed to UC San Diego, his father Gary said. Shapiro, who plays water polo, soccer and swims for the Vaqueros, is a two-time Zone 7 Youth National water polo team member.

WATER POLO

Foothill’s Vickie Brown signed a letter of intent to play water polo at Michigan, Foothill Coach Jim Brumm said.

TRACK AND FIELD

Marina’s Vanessa Kelly has signed a letter of intent to run for Texas A&M;, Viking Coach Dave Sanford said.
