Venus Williams beat second-seeded Jennifer Capriati, 6-4, 7-6 (1), in a semifinal match at the Pilot Pen at New Haven, Conn., hours after she had won a three-set quarterfinal over Justine Henin.

The third-seeded Williams will play top-seeded Lindsay Davenport in the final today. Davenport advanced when No. 4 Kim Clijsters pulled out because of a leg injury.

Williams, the two-time defending champion, showed no fatigue in the night match. The quarterfinal had been postponed from Thursday night by rain.

Williams defeated the fifth-seeded Henin, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, in the afternoon. In all she played 52 games in 3 hours, 30 minutes.

Pete Sampras reached the semifinals of a tournament for only the fourth time this year with a 7-5 6-3 victory over Felix Mantilla in the Hamlet Cup at Commack, N.Y.

The third-seeded Sampras will play fifth-seeded Thomas Johansson, who beat Thomas Enqvist, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (9), in a quarterfinal match between Swedish Davis Cup teammates.

Former Auburn basketball star Chris Porter was arrested on drug charges after he was stopped for a traffic violation. Dothan, Ala., police said the Golden State forward had small plastic bags with cocaine and another with marijuana in the car. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and second-degree possession of marijuana.

Hank Sauer, the 1952 National League most valuable player with the Chicago Cubs, died Friday in Burlingame, Calif. He was 84.
