Running back T.A. McLendon of Albemarle, N.C., scored seven touchdowns Saturday in a state championship game to set the national high school single-season touchdown record.
McLendon raised his season total to 71 in Albemarle’s 66-28 victory over Wallace-Rose Hill in the Class 1-AA final.
McLendon, who finished with 289 yards in 31 carries, eclipsed the previous record of 66, set by Brett Law of Sheridan, Ind., in 1988.
In October, McLendon broke Law’s national career touchdown record of 141, and broke the national career scoring record a month later. He finished his career with 178 touchdowns and 1,070 points. He set five state records this year: touchdowns in a career, touchdowns in a season, career yards rushing (8,969), points in a season (428) and career points.
