Thousand Oaks advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in 10 years, but lost a coin flip against Cajon for home-court advantage Friday in the Division I-AA playoffs.

It equates to almost a 110-mile trip for the No. 4-seeded Lancers (22-5), who hosted a first-round game against Hart and traveled only 11 miles to Camarillo in the second round.

“I think it’s going to make a difference in the outcome,” Thousand Oaks Coach Rich Endres said the night before the coin flip. “It could be raining and it’ll be a long drive. Neither team wants to make that trip.”

It might have been the biggest shot of Royal Weaver’s life. At the very least, it was unexpected.

Weaver, a senior guard at Buckley known more for his driving skills and defense than his long-distance range, hit an important three-pointer with about 12 seconds left to tie a Division V-AA playoff game against Montclair Prep.

Weaver, who had made only one other three-pointer in his career, finished with 13 points for Buckley, which won in overtime, 77-76.

“It’s the craziest thing,” Coach Dan Hassch said. “You never know who’s going to step up.”

Buckley (24-3) trailed by eight with about 40 seconds left, but will host a quarterfinal against Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian (19-3) on Friday.
