Montgomery, McCarthy Honored

Devin Montgomery of Moorpark College has been selected player of the year for the Western State Conference North Division and Remy McCarthy of Moorpark has been chosen coach of the year.

The Raiders (22-5, 9-1 in WSC play), who open play in the Southern California regional tournament at 7 tonight at home against Grossmont, won their fourth division title and first outright.

Montgomery was the second-leading scorer in the WSC at 22.1 points per game and ranked among conference leaders in assists (4.1), field-goal shooting (50.7%), three-point shooting (37.1%) and free-throw shooting (75.5%).

Lester Strong and T.K. Reed of Moorpark were selected to the all-conference team, as were Desmond Penigar and Alhaji Mohammed of runner-up Ventura and Chris Massie, Keron Wilkerson and William Brown of Oxnard.

Honorable mention selections included Trevor Lorz of Moorpark, Matt Dickenson of Oxnard and Keith West of Ventura.

FOOTBALL

* Nathan Terrazone, an All-Valley linebacker from St. Francis, has accepted an appointment to the Air Force Academy.

SOCCER

* Chaminade forward Alec deMattos and Reseda midfielder Rosendo Gonzales have committed to Cal State Northridge.

FISHING

* The annual spring adult fishing derby at Apollo Park in Lancaster is 7-11 a.m. on March 3.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first through 10th places for heaviest trout. Anglers must be 16 or older and have a valid fishing license.

More than $5,000 was awarded in prizes last year. The winner will receive 15% of the prize money.

Proceeds go to sponsor the annual free youth fishing derby, which is scheduled for May 3.

WRESTLING

* A youth wrestling program for children 7 and older is underway at Dexter County Park.

The program, sponsored by L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation, costs $20 for an eight-week session. Instruction is 5:30-7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Richard Aguirre, a former high school and club coach, will teach freestyle, Greco-Roman and folkstyle techniques, and focus on strength, endurance, agility and moves.
