Falcons Win on Second Effort

Justin Tagawa made four three-pointers and Crescenta Valley High used a strong second half to defeat Glendale, 62-48, in a Pacific League boys’ basketball opener Tuesday at Glendale.

Jimmy Goffredo, who returned from a five-game absence because of a hip injury, scored 11 points for Crescenta Valley (13-3).

Tagawa finished with 14 points and James Jenkins had 13 for the Falcons, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times.

Varooj Karibyan scored 27 points for Glendale (8-9), which trailed, 26-22, at halftime.

In other boys’ games:

Valencia 68, Burroughs 61--The Vikings made eight of nine free throws in the fourth quarter to win a Foothill League game at Burroughs.

The Indians (6-10, 1-1 in league play) blew a nine-point first-quarter lead and trailed by eight after three quarters but drew to within one point with four minutes to play.

Matt Torres scored 23 points for Burroughs.

Alex Dunwoody and Will Broadus each had 14 points for the Vikings (11-5, 2-0).

Saugus 56, Burbank 51--Chad Krogh scored 22 points and the Centurions (11-6, 2-0) rallied from a nine-point second-quarter deficit to win a Foothill League game at Burbank.

Canyon 63, Hart 61--Brian Waite scored the winning basket with about 45 seconds left in overtime of a Foothill League game at Canyon (10-8, 1-1).

Waite scored 18 points and Matt Nelson had 21.

Paul Hanges scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half for Hart (9-9, 0-2).

Santa Clara 61, Nordhoff 42--Albert Soria scored 22 points and the Saints gradually pulled away in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.

Alex Minney added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Santa Clara (6-10, 1-1), which led at halftime, 28-21.

GIRLS

Buena 85, Oxnard 41--The Bulldogs shot 57% from the field and had 22 steals in destroying the No. 9-ranked team in the region by The Times in the nonleague game at home.

Top-ranked Buena led, 27-3, at the end of the first quarter and 44-15 at halftime as Kelly Greathouse scored 22 of her 26 points in the first two quarters.

Greathouse made 12 of 14 shots and Courtney Young made 10 of 18 while scoring 26 points for the Bulldogs (15-0).

Saugus 62, Burbank 40--Sophomores Jesse Loring and Sheridan Arredondo dominated in a Foothill League game at Saugus.

Loring scored 13 points and Arredondo had 12 points and eight rebounds for Saugus (15-2, 2-0), ranked No. 5 in the region.

Valencia 64, Burroughs 53--Marissa Meadows scored 23 points and Stephanie Patterson had 20 for the Vikings in a Foothill League victory at Valencia.

Patterson made eight of 15 shots and all four of her free throws as Valencia (15-3, 2-0) won its seventh game in a row.

Hart 59, Canyon 38--The Indians extended a one-point halftime lead in a Foothill League game at Hart.

Amanda Patten scored 13 points, and Briana Brigandi and Ali Campbell each added 11 for Hart (13-3, 2-0), ranked No. 4 in the region.

Harvard-Westlake 57, Louisville 33--The Wolverines had 24 steals in a Mission League victory at Harvard-Westlake.

Karina Siam scored 12 points for the No. 2-ranked Wolverines (14-3, 2-0), who held Louisville (8-7, 1-1) to two points in the third quarter.

San Marcos 55, Ventura 54--Jen Dooley missed an 18-foot jump shot at the buzzer as the Cougars lost in a Channel League game at Ventura.

Chelsea Popp had 22 points, including a follow shot with 15 seconds left for San Marcos (8-7, 1-1).

Dooley scored 24 points and Katy O’Brien had 18 points for Ventura (11-4, 0-2).

Camarillo 52, Rio Mesa 51--Gillian Lillich had 24 points for the Scorpions (14-3, 1-0) in a Pacific View League game at Camarillo.

Rachel Young added nine points and nine rebounds for Camarillo, ranked No. 6 in the region.

Chaminade 66, Notre Dame 47--Christina Zdenek had 27 points for the Eagles (13-2, 1-1) in a Mission League victory at Chaminade.

Santa Clara 53, Nordhoff 46--Ashley Biggins had 22 points, 27 rebounds and 14 blocked shots and the Saints (7-9, 2-0) pulled away late to win a Frontier League game at Nordhoff.

The Rangers (8-9, 1-1) held Biggins to two points in the second half and drew to within two points with two minutes to play.

L.A. Baptist 60, Scott Academy 21--Kelly Feirfeil scored 19 points in an Alpha League victory at L.A. Baptist.
