No. 1 Foothill Wins Tournament of Champions

Foothill, the top-ranked girls’ water polo team in Orange County, defeated second-ranked Capistrano Valley, 6-3, in the final of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions Saturday at UC Santa Barbara.

All-tournament selections Brittany Hayes (three goals), Gabbie Domanic (two goals) and Emily Feher (seven saves) led the Knights (14-1), who pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Capistrano Valley (12-2-1) got within 4-3 after three quarters but the Cougars were shut out in the fourth. Amber Stachowski, the tournament MVP, scored only one goal for Capistrano Valley.

In the Inland Empire tournament:

Woodbridge 5, Tustin 3--Rochelle Gauthier scored three goals and her sister, Jacquelyn, scored twice for Woodbridge (15-4), which defeated previously undefeated Tustin to win the title.

In the Double Pump boys’ basketball tournament:

No. 1 Mater Dei 104, Canyon 79--Harrison Schaen had 13 points, 15 rebounds, 10 blocked shots and three steals, and Cedric Bozeman added 18 points and 10 assists for the Monarchs (17-2) at Long Beach City College. Mater Dei played without starting center Jamal Sampson, who was ineligible after being ejected for two technical fouls in Friday’s game at Santa Margarita.

Chris Roberson scored 20 points and Matt Barranick had 16 for Canyon (9-10).

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Aliso Niguel 73, Magnolia 51--Julia Pederson scored 25 points and Allison Scurich had 13 points and 10 rebounds for host Aliso Niguel (14-3).

El Modena 51, Orange Lutheran 49--Lindsey Gallasso had 19 points, including four three-pointers, and Norrelle Dickson had 18 points and five rebounds to lead El Modena (7-10, 1-2).

No. 6 Woodbridge 55, Capistrano Valley 19--Kelsi Sousa scored 18 points and Lara Gray added 10 for the Warriors (17-0).

In the Katella girls’ soccer tournament:

No. 9 Sunny Hills advances--Megan Borschak scored three goals in two games as the Lancers (16-0-2) advanced to next Saturday’s semifinals with two 4-0 victories.
