* Billy Parra, an assistant coach at Kennedy who helped turn the Golden Cougars into one of the region’s top passing schools, has resigned to become passing game coordinator and wide receiver coach at Valley College.

* Hart, three-time defending Southern Section Division III champion, has agreed to play City champion Banning next season.

The game is tentatively scheduled for week five.

* Canyon Principal Vicki Engbrecht said she has sent her recommendation of Harry Welch to become football coach to the William S. Hart Union High School District Board of Education and expects approval at its Jan. 31 meeting.

Engbrecht, who passed over Welch two years ago after Larry Mohr resigned, said circumstances were different this time. Welch, 55, coached the Cowboys for 11 years before resigning in 1993.

“Students were unanimous of the opinion that he is an outstanding motivator and teacher,” Engbrecht said.

BASEBALL

* Paul McNulty, a left-handed pitcher from Oxnard College, has committed to Long Beach State.

BASKETBALL

* The Van Nuys/Reseda Elks Lodge will conduct its 29th annual free-throw shooting contest at 8 a.m. on Saturday at Cleveland High.

Boys and girls 8-13 will compete in three age divisions. Each player gets 25 free throws, with winners advancing to district competition.

SOFTBALL

* The Northridge Amateur Softball Assn. is conducting tryouts Saturday and Sunday at 18747 Devonshire St. in Northridge.

Tryouts and registration are divided into four groups. Girls 16-and-under are at 8:30 a.m.; 12-and-under at 10:30 a.m.; 10-and-under at 12:30 p.m.; 8-and-under at 3 p.m.

* Lake Casitas will be stocked with 2,000 pounds of rainbow trout on Tuesday. The trout will weigh approximately one pound each.
