100-Point Effort Bettered on Same Night

A high school player scored 101 points in a game on the same night that another player scored 100--the first time anyone reached triple digits since 1979.

Heritage Christian Academy junior Cedric Hensley scored 101 in a 178-28 victory over Banff Christian School of Tomball, Texas, and DaJuan Wagner scored 100 for Camden High in a 157-67 victory over Gloucester Township Technical School at Camden, N.J., Tuesday.

Hensley and Wagner are the 13th and 14th boys’ basketball players to score at least 100, according to the National High School Sports Record Book.

“He’s having a surgical procedure done [today] and he will be out for about a week and a half, so this was his last game before he would be out,” Heritage Coach Jerome Tang said of Hensley.

The players decided to do something special for Hensley before his operation.

“Our goal was to have Ced play as much of the game as possible and get him 50 points,” Tang said, but Hensley already had that many by halftime.

“After he had 50 at the half, the kids said, ‘We think we can get him 100,’ ” Tang said. “It was a team effort and it took more than one individual to do this because everyone on the team was not concerned about ‘what about my points’ or anything like that. A lot of guys have their egos, but they put theirs aside for one night.”

With three minutes left, Hensley had 83 points but was tiring.

“We took him out and I asked him, ‘Do you think you can score 17 in 2 1/2 minutes?’ and he said that he could,” Tang said. “He went back out there and didn’t miss another shot and ended up with 101 points.”

Banff Coach Geoff Norton said he wasn’t upset at Heritage’s attempts to bolster the point total of Hensley, who averages about 20 points a game.

“I was proud that my guys had a lot of heart and they didn’t walk off the court discouraged,” Norton said.
