First Quarter Pointless, but Woodbridge a Winner

Shut out in the first quarter, fifth-ranked Woodbridge bounced back Wednesday to overtake Irvine and win, 56-50, in a Sea View League boys’ basketball game at Woodbridge.

The Warriors (17-4, 4-0) missed all 12 of their shots from the field in the first period and trailed, 10-0. Woodbridge rallied to tie the score, 25-25, at the half, then pulled away with strong free-throw shooting down the stretch.

Danny Lambert made all 13 of his free throws and finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds for Woodbridge. Bobby Sarwine had 10 points to lead Irvine (10-12, 1-3), which went to the free-throw line only four times. Woodbridge made 20 of 26 free-throw attempts.

In another Sea View League game:

Aliso Niguel 53, No. 10 Newport Harbor 52--Zach Zanolli scored 17 points, making nine of 10 free-throw attempts, and Brandon Sievers had 14 for visiting Aliso Niguel (13-9, 2-2). Aaron Yarnal led Newport Harbor (16-5, 2-2) with 19 points and Tony Melum added 17 points.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 52, Century 44--Jon Uyloan had 22 points, eight steals and seven assists and Matt Reid had 19 points for host Cypress (11-9, 2-3).

No. 8 El Dorado 63, Katella 31--Evan Bull had 18 points and 21 rebounds for El Dorado (18-3, 4-1), which took a 32-19 halftime lead.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 57, Garden Grove 52--Andy Munoz’s three-pointer with 15 seconds to play gave the Aztecs the lead for good, after Albert Subandhi had made two free throws with 30 seconds remaining to tie the score, 52-52.

Los Amigos 73, Rancho Alamitos 45--Peter Vu had 27 points, making five three-pointers for Los Amigos (12-10, 5-2), which took over sole possession of first place in the league.

Pacifica 76, Santiago 57--Joel Bruck scored 19 points and grabbed a school-record 22 rebounds for host Pacifica (12-10, 6-2).

Alex Puente made seven three-pointers and had 23 points for Santiago (4-17, 2-6).

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 70, Anaheim 55--Geoffrey Clayton scored 35 points, 14 in the final quarter, to lead host Magnolia (12-9, 4-1). Clayton also made 17 of 20 free throws and had 10 rebounds to help Coach Al Walin to the 399th victory of his career.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 73, University 65--Micah Young, a junior forward, scored a career-high 39 points, making 15 of 20 shots from the field, for the host Eagles (7-13, 2-3). Hiro Christoph scored 23 points and Jason Garey added 19 for University (12-9, 4-1).

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 53, Huntington Beach 42--Brian Rakusin had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Griffins (12-7, 5-0), who led, 30-16, at halftime.
