Three Southland Players to Play in All-Star Game

The strength of Southland high school basketball was recognized this week when three local players were selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American high school basketball game March 28 at Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Cedric Bozeman of Santa Ana Mater Dei, Josh Childress of Lakewood Mayfair and Tyson Chandler of Compton Dominguez will play for the 12-member West team.

Bozeman, a 6-foot-6 guard, has signed a letter of intent to attend UCLA. Childress, 6-6, has signed with Stanford. Chandler, 7-0, has not committed to a college and is regarded as a potential lottery pick in the NBA draft.

At the 1999 season-ending banquet for the Agoura girls’ water polo team, Coach Jason Rosenthal told the audience the team would win a Southern Section championship.

Rosenthal’s prediction came true Wednesday in Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool at Pepperdine, when the Chargers defeated Santa Barbara, 5-2, in a rematch of the 2000 Division II championship game.

It was Santa Barbara’s first post-season loss in three years of girls’ water polo.

Rosey Godlis gave Santa Barbara (23-8-1) a 1-0 lead with 5:08 remaining in the first quarter. Agoura’s Joanna Antonsen tied the score with 3:31 remaining in the first quarter with an outside shot from the right side after Agoura goalkeeper Graziella Caredda’s second of four steals.

The turning point came with 2:45 left in the third quarter, when Godlis fouled out by holding Antonsen in front of the Santa Barbara goal. Antonsen converted the two-meter penalty shot to put Agoura ahead, 2-1, and even though Lauren Boreta tied the score with a power-play goal 46 seconds later, the damage to Santa Barbara’s defense had been done.

Santa Barbara goalkeeper Charlotte Gray had 10 saves.

Agoura finished 27-4.
