Ten Looking for Repeat Performances

Narbonne, Torrance Bishop Montgomery, Playa del Rey St. Bernard and Pilgrim will try to successfully defend their titles when City and Southern Section girls’ basketball championship games are played this weekend.

The City Invitational final is Friday at Los Angeles Southwest College, the City championship game Saturday at the Forum.

Southern Section finals are Friday and Saturday at the Pyramid in Long Beach.

Here is a look at each championship game:

CITY SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP

* NARBONNE vs. WESTCHESTER, Saturday at the Forum, 4 p.m.: Defending City and state champion Narbonne is aiming to repeat both titles and the Lady Gauchos will be tough to stop with Tennessee-bound guard Loree Moore leading the way. Westchester is led by USC-bound center Kim Gipson, but the Comets do not have as much depth as Narbonne.

CITY SECTION INVITATIONAL

* EL CAMINO REAL (17-7) vs. GRANADA HILLS (16-12), Friday at Southwest L.A. College, 8 p.m.: Lindsay Goldblatt and Karen Shun lead El Camino Real. Kelly Beckler scored 29 points for Granada Hills in a semifinal victory over Marshall.

SOUTHERN SECTION

DIVISION I-AAA

* LYNWOOD (24-2) vs. ANAHEIM ESPERANZA (26-4), Saturday at the Pyramid, 8:15 p.m.: Sade Wiley-Gatewood and Necel Woods are top players for top-seeded Lynwood, which is out to challenge Ventura Buena and Narbonne for the Southern California regional title. Esperanza is led by center Bethany Blair.

DIVISION I-AA

* SAN CLEMENTE (27-3) vs. IRVINE (24-6), Saturday at the Pyramid, 2:45 p.m.: Kristin Thawley scored 16 points in the semifinals as Irvine advanced to its first championship game. Kim Buffum and Megan Blackshire lead top-seeded San Clemente.

DIVISION I-A

* VENTURA BUENA (28-0) vs. FULLERTON TROY (26-4), Saturday at the Pyramid, 6:30 p.m.: Buena, led by Tennessee-bound guard Courtney Young, is ranked No. 1 in the nation by several polls and is trying to win its seventh section title. Troy, making its third consecutive appearance in a final, is seeking its first championship.

DIVISION II-AA

* BREA OLINDA (25-4) vs. NORTH TORRANCE (26-4), Friday at the Pyramid, 8:15 p.m.: Brea Olinda is in the finals for the 13th consecutive year. North Torrance will try to do what Bay League rival Redondo Union did to Brea last season--beat it in the championship game.

DIVISION II-A

* LAKEWOOD ARTESIA (27-1) vs. PASADENA MUIR (23-3), Friday at the Pyramid, 6:30 p.m.: Top-seeded Artesia has stayed on course behind center Lauren Ervin and guard Brittney Thomas, who helped lead Bishop Montgomery to the III-AA title last season. Muir defeated Redondo Union to advance to the final.

DIVISION III-AA

* TORRANCE BISHOP MONTGOMERY (25-5) vs. North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake (25-5), Friday at the Pyramid, 4:45 p.m.: Noelle Quinn leads defending division and state champion Bishop Montgomery. Forwards Karina Siam and Nyasha Bralock, transfers from Mission Hills Alemany, lead Harvard-Westlake.

DIVISION IV-AA

* MORRO BAY (20-5) vs. OAK PARK (22-5), Saturday at the Pyramid, 1 p.m.: Karena Bonds, who scored 30 points in the quarterfinals and 18 in the semifinals, is Morro Bay’s top player. Oak Park has several three-year starters and is making its first championship-game appearance.

DIVISION IV-A

* PLAYA DEL REY ST. BERNARD (18-11) vs. SANTA ANA CALVARY CHAPEL (21-8), Friday at the Pyramid, 3 p.m.: St. Bernard is the defending champion. The Vikings can repeat if they stop Erin John and Shayna Fabre, who led Calvary Chapel in a semifinal victory over Santa Maria St. Joseph.

DIVISION V-AA

* HUNTINGTON BEACH BRETHREN CHRISTIAN (21-9) vs. VAN NUYS MONTCLAIR PREP (26-0), Saturday at the Pyramid, 11:15 a.m.: Heather Spowart scored 17 points and had nine rebounds for Brethren Christian in the semifinals. Montclair Prep defeated Oxnard Santa Clara to reach the final.

DIVISION V-A

* PILGRIM (23-6) vs. ROLLING HILLS PREP (25-3), Saturday at the Pyramid, 9:30 a.m.: Top-seeded Pilgrim is the defending champion, but the Patriots could have their hands full with a Rolling Hills Prep team led by Lauryn Stayton.
