Days before Jeff Young resigned as boys’ basketball coach at Chaminade High, Principal Gary Murphy concluded an internal investigation into allegations Young recruited former guard Will Sheslow.

Thom Simmons, spokesman for the Southern Section, said Friday Chaminade reported a possible violation of Southern Section rules involving its boys’ basketball program on Feb. 7.

Stuart Sheslow, Will’s father, said Young came to their family home last spring in Agoura while his son was enrolled at Montclair Prep and sought to convince his son to transfer to Chaminade.

Young, who said he was a family friend of the Sheslows, said, “There was never a time when [Will] was enrolled at Montclair Prep that I went over to their house.”

Young said he visited the family after Sheslow had been accepted and enrolled at Chaminade, and only at the invitation of the family.

“I never, ever once said he should come to Chaminade,” Young said. “This is a clear-cut case of a family [that is] really bitter.”

Sheslow, a junior, transferred to Chaminade in September, then quit the team in January after receiving little playing time. He transferred to Granada Hills.

Murphy refused comment whether his investigation was a factor in Young’s announcement on Monday that he had resigned after seven years with the Eagles.

“We had an internal investigation about some accusations and the matter is closed,” he said.

Young said he resigned to pursue college coaching opportunities.

Stuart Sheslow said Murphy requested an exit interview after Will and his brother left Chaminade. The Sheslows have known Young since Will was in seventh grade.

Sheslow started for two years at Montclair Prep, averaging 10.9 points and 5.7 assists as a sophomore.
