Pierce Turns to Woodlief, Former Coach at Bell-Jeff

Doug Woodlief, who coached football at Bell-Jeff High for 11 seasons, has been selected coach at Pierce College.

Woodlief, who played middle linebacker in the NFL and learned from coaches George Allen, Ted Marchibroda and Dick Vermeil, replaces David Banuelos, who resigned to become an assistant at Valley College.

BASEBALL

* Brad Boyer of Camarillo High, one of the top shortstops in the region, will be sidelined at least a month after breaking his jaw during a freak accident at a batting cage.

Boyer underwent surgery last week. A ball slipped through a hole in a net while he was sitting on a bucket and hit him on the jaw.

* Chris White, the No. 2 pitcher at Westlake High, has been lost for a month after undergoing an appendectomy Friday.

* Scouts George Genovese of the Dodgers, Al Kubski of the Atlanta Braves and Dick Wincek of the Milwaukee Brewers will be guests on “The 7th Inning Stretch,” which will be televised on Time Warner Cable channel 34.

The discussion will focus on the impact of scouting in the last 50 years of baseball and whether scouts should be considered for the Hall of Fame. The show is scheduled to air on Monday and March 12 at 5 p.m.

MOTORSPORTS

* Sean Woodside of Saugus, driving a car painted black with a white No. 3 on the hood in tribute to Dale Earnhardt, finished third in the NAPA 300 NASCAR Winston West Race on Thursday on the .375-mile oval known as “The Bullring” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Woodside, 1999 Winston West champion who competed in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour last year, was one of four cars dueling for the lead on the final lap.

Rookie Mark Reed of Bakersfield, who started from the pole position, held off Mike Duncan of Lamont, Woodside and Austin Cameron of El Cajon for his first victory.

Ron Hornaday Jr., former Palmdale resident, dropped out on lap 196 with engine failure and was credited with 20th place.

VOLLEYBALL

* The Pacific Volleyball Club has tryouts for a boys’ 14-and-under from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday at Balboa Middle School in Ventura.
