Victories in Doubles Help Saddleback Knock Off Fresno
Saddleback defeated Fresno, 5-4, in men’s tennis, stopping the previously undefeated Rams, ranked second in the state.
Saddleback (12-1), ranked No. 3 in the state, got victories from the doubles teams of Chris Mark-David DiMartino and Tim Dileo-Jason Efstathiou.
The schools split, 3-3, in singles.
In Orange Empire Conference softball:
Saddleback 10, Orange Coast 2--Laura Joiner singled, scored three times and had two RBIs for Saddleback (4-5, 2-3), which scored eight runs in the first inning.
In pool play of the Golden West tournament:
Fullerton wins two--Amesha Ledezma highlighted the Hornets’ 5-3 victory over Shasta with two doubles and two RBIs. Colleen Burdick (9-1), a graduate of Fountain Valley High, was the winning pitcher. She also got on base three times with a single and two walks, stole a base and scored one run.
In the second game, Fullerton beat Long Beach, 4-3, as the Hornets got seven hits in the third inning. Andee Lindgren (9-3) got the victory, striking out three.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:
Golden West 157, Cypress 14--Diogo Yabe (500 freestyle, 200 backstroke) and Delonte Stephens (100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke) were double winners for Golden West.
In nonconference men’s track:
Huey doubles--Golden West sprinter Brandon Huey won the 100 meters (10.70) and 200 meters (22.06) for the Rustlers, who finished second in a three-way meet involving winner San Diego Mesa and third-place Rio Hondo.
In nonconference women’s track and field:
Lualemaga sets record--Santa Ana’s Matala Lualemaga broke the school shotput record, which she set in February, with a throw of 40 feet 10 inches. She also won the discus and javelin events.
Orange Coast beat Santa Ana, 94-48, and Antelope Valley, 80-50.
Price sets record--Golden West’s Amber Price broke her school record in the triple jump with a leap of 35-9 for the Rustlers, who won a three-way meet with 100 points to 92 for Riverside and 79 for San Diego Mesa. Price also won the high jump (4-8), long jump (16-4) and javelin (100-2), as well as scoring points in four other events.
