Deep Rio Mesa Has Field Day, Routs Hueneme in Opener, 73-54

Rio Mesa High used superior depth in field events to defeat host Hueneme, 73-54, in a Pacific View League boys’ track and field opener on Thursday.

Rio Mesa, ranked No. 4 in the region by The Times, won only three of 19 running events but outscored Hueneme, 44-1, in field events.

“That saved [us],” Coach Pete Weinerth of Rio Mesa said.

Junior Chris Davis won the shotput in 46-4 and the discus in 138-2 for Rio Mesa (3-0).

The Spartans also got double victories from Phillip Reid in the 1,600 (4:29.0) and 3,200 meters (9:55.7), and from Justin Johnson in the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.3) and high jump (5-8).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale 10, Valley 6--Jimmy Stone had three hits, two runs batted in, three stolen bases and scored four runs to help the Vaqueros win a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Glendale.

John Manuel had three hits with an RBI and scored three runs for Glendale (14-3, 5-2 in division play).

Ventura 2, Hancock 1--Donnie Fuller and Mike Lopez combined on a six-hitter, and the Pirates turned four double plays in a WSC Northern Division game at Ventura.

Fuller (1-1) struck out six and allowed five hits and an earned run in seven innings.

Lopez induced double plays in the eighth and ninth innings, and earned his second save.

Tony Lagos singled in Cade Carper in the third with the decisive run.

Ventura is 5-10, 1-6.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Grant 75, Granada Hills 75--Suzie Matevosian clocked 22.19 in the 50 freestyle and the Lancers (1-0-1, 1-0-1) tied six-time defending City champion Granada Hills in an East Valley League meet at Cal State Northridge.

Hitomi Aihara swam 2:29.67 in the 200 individual medley for Granada Hills.

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL

Westlake 1, Newbury Park 0--Stephanie Savry scored with two out in the eighth after left fielder Chrissy Zappia and center fielder Robyn Wike collided trying to catch a fly ball hit by Katie Kearns in a Marmonte League opener at Westlake.

Michelle Rehm (4-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out five for Westlake (4-1).

La Canada 6, Harvard-Westlake 0--Kelly Kalish and Danielle Mellin combined for a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Spartans (2-0) in a nonleague game at Valley College.

Freshman Courtney Turner had three hits, including a double, in her varsity debut.

Agoura 3, Oak Park 0--Michelle Smith pitched a one-hitter and had two doubles and an RBI in a nonleague game at Agoura (3-2).

Notre Dame 3, La Reina 2--Jessica Mundy hit a run-scoring triple for the Knights in a nonleague game at La Reina (3-5).

Village Christian 5, Azusa 4--Patricia Servillo’s run-scoring single in the ninth gave the Crusaders (6-0) a semifinal victory at the Duarte tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Arizona 85, Pepperdine 65--Veranda James had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and the Wildcats (20-11) outrebounded Pepperdine, 45-28, in a National Invitation Tournament first-round game at Arizona.

Rasheeda Clark and Damaris Hinojosa each scored 15 points for the Waves (20-11).
