* Maryland vs. Georgia State: The only matchup people seem to care about is Panther Coach Lefty Driesell against Maryland, where he made, then tarnished, his reputation. There is much more going on here, though. Of concern to Maryland is the late-season slump of senior forward Terence Morris. He struggled in the ACC tournament and in the first-round escape over George Mason. Morris scored four points, all on free throws, took only three shots and bricked two free throws in the last 20 seconds. Maryland needs him to dominate inside against the smaller Panthers. Georgia State’s strength is at guard. Shernard Long, Kevin Morris and Darryl Cooper are all streak shooters who have quick drives to the basket and key fast breaks with defensive pressure and steals. Maryland guard Juan Dixon is just as quick, though, and is bigger and stronger. Georgia State has won 24 in a row when it holds opponents to under 70 points and the Panthers have beaten four NCAA tournament teams--Wisconsin, Hawaii, Cal State Northridge and Georgia.

* Georgetown vs. Hampton: Neither team was seeded to be playing in the second round. The Pirates, making their first NCAA tournament trip, upset Iowa State because the Cyclones were strong at guard but not inside, same as Hampton. But the Pirates may own the Cinderella slipper for only one game. Georgetown has a lot of big bodies inside. Hampton forward Tarvis Williams, a 6-foot-9, 200-pound forward, had 16 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots against Iowa State but ran into foul trouble while handling the Cyclones’ meager inside presence. Against Georgetown, he will face 7-0 center Ruben Boumtje Boumtje, 6-11 center Lee Scruggs, 6-8 forward Victor Samnick and 6-8 forward Mike Sweetney. Williams has impressed NBA scouts, but he has no inside help. “There are no underdogs at this point,” Georgetown Coach Craig Esherick says. But in this game, Hampton is definitely the underdog.
