Geery’s Two-Hitter Throws West Torrance for 9-1 Loss
Right-hander Adam Geery struck out nine and walked one in a two-hitter, and Kennedy High routed West Torrance, 9-1, in a first-round game of the Redondo Union baseball tournament Saturday at West Torrance High.
West Torrance (5-1), ranked No. 1 in Southern California by The Times in the preseason, got only a single in the second inning and a solo home run in the seventh off Geery (2-0).
Chris Schreiber had three hits and drove in four runs for Kennedy. He hit a three-run home run in the seventh for the Golden Cougars (6-2), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times.
Kennedy also got two hits by Phil Avlas, a two-run homer by Chad Shaw and a two-run single by Tim St. Pierre.
Burroughs 3, Crespi 2--Tim Murphy’s run-scoring single with two out in the ninth gave the Indians (5-1) fifth place in the El Segundo tournament.
Pat Zivelonghi hit a two-out single and stole second base in the ninth.
Royal 8, Ridgecrest Burroughs 0--Jason Urquidez (1-0) pitched a no-hitter with two strikeouts, three walks and two hit batters for the Highlanders in a nonleague victory at Royal.
Brian Gunn and Nick Jewell each had two hits and drove in a run for Royal (7-1), which took a 4-0 lead after two innings.
J.D. Martin (3-1) of Burroughs struck out 10 and walked none.
Chatsworth 17, Verdugo Hills 3--Jared Halpert had three hits, including a solo home run, and three runs batted in for the Chancellors in a first-round victory in the Chatsworth tournament at Verdugo Hills.
Jason Dominguez gave up three hits with three strikeouts in six innings for Chatsworth (8-0), ranked No. 2 in the region by The Times.
Alemany 11, Cantwell Sacred Heart 1--Mike Strazzeri hit two grand slams for the Indians (4-3), who won by way of the five-inning mercy rule in a first-round game of the L.A. Baptist tournament.
Simi Valley 4, Righetti 3--John Arisohn’s RBI single capped a three-run seventh inning for the Pioneers (5-3) in a nonleague victory at Simi Valley.
Grant 5, Granada Hills 1--Jeremy Harrison was three for three with three RBIs for the Lancers (5-3) in a nonleague victory at Grant.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Newbury Park 5, Peninsula 0--Katie Stokx had two hits and two RBIs and struck out nine in four innings as the Panthers (7-2) won the fifth-place game of the Downey tournament at South Gate Park.
Crescenta Valley 1, Downey 0--Kirsten Whitt’s sacrifice fly in the 10th gave the Falcons (5-1) third place in the Downey tournament.
Meredith Cervenka, The Times’ pitcher of the year last season, threw a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts.
Cervenka allowed a single in the eighth inning.
Village Christian 5, Temple City 0--Lauren Nydam threw a perfect game for the Crusaders (7-0) in the championship game of the Duarte tournament at Village Christian.
Nydam (5-0) struck out 12. She has not allowed a run in four starts.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Canyons 10, Santa Monica 1--Amanda DeFusco was three for three with eight RBIs and scored a run for the Cougars (10-5, 6-2) in a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Canyons.
