All Signs Are Positive for National Tournament

After two years, the National High School Tennis All-American tournament appears to be growing up nicely. The event’s finances are in order, the caliber of play seems to be improving and the feedback has been almost entirely positive.

“We’re getting bigger and better,” said tournament director Tim Mang. “It was easier for us to run and we’re getting out the flaws. It helped that we had 15 volunteers that worked their tails off.”

Mang is always looking for more sponsors, but he said the tournament is not in any trouble financially.

“We had money left over from last year that we used this year, he said.

Mang, who coaches the Corona del Mar boys’ team, said there will probably be a few slight changes next year. The scoring system for consolation games might be changed from eight-game pro sets to the regular six-game sets and more county teams will be invited. University and Corona del Mar were the only two county teams in the field this year.

The girls’ national tournament is scheduled for Oct. 5-6 at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club in Newport Beach. Mang said Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor and Troy have accepted invitations.

The following players were selected to the national all-tournament team: Rylan Rizza, Jeff Kazarian and Teige Sullivan of Peninsula; Brian Morton, Cameron Ball and Garrett Snyder of Corona del Mar; Brian Wright and Dustin Ilic of Clovis West; James Pade and Patrick MacKay of Atherton Menlo; Sam Warburg of Carmichael Jesuit and Brian Swatt of Beverly Hills.

Santa Ana and Ocean View played last Monday to decide first place in the Golden West League. But after three hours, nothing was settled.

Santa Ana led, 9-7, with its top two doubles teams--Cesar Miramontes and Oscar Sanchez and Jose Ramirez and Angel Gonzalez--on the court. But both teams lost--setting up a 9-9 score and a strange ending. Santa Ana Coach Bill Miller thought his team had lost by nine games, so he sent a couple of his players home. Ocean View also had a player leave.

But after a recount, Miller came up with a tie score in games. Since neither team had enough players left to play a round of tiebreakers, the match was suspended. It will only be made up if Santa Ana and Ocean View tie for the league title.
