Marina Needs 3 1/2 Hours to Top Tritons

Marina, ranked eighth in the county, outlasted No. 10 San Clemente, 15-9, 11-15, 12-15, 15-9, 15-12, in a 3 1/2-hour nonleague boys’ volleyball match Tuesday at Marina High.

Beau Peters had 101 assists, Steffin Rangel, who has signed with Brigham Young, had 38 kills and nine blocks and Drew Wilson had 27 kills for Marina (4-1).

Nick Gardner finished with 35 kills for the Tritons (2-1).

In other nonleague matches:

No. 7 Mater Dei 3, No. 2 Fountain Valley 0--John Daze had 15 kills, and setter Mike Gazanno had 41 assists for the host Monarchs (3-1), who won, 15-10, 15-7, 15-1.

Nate Hagstrom had 41 kills for Fountain Valley (1-2).

No. 4 Capistrano Valley 3, Laguna Beach 0--Jeff Craw recorded 34 assists for host Capistrano Valley (4-0), which won, 15-9, 15-11, 15-3.

No. 6 Irvine 3, No. 9 Edison 0--Zach Jardine had 20 kills and Kris Kraushaar had 17 for Irvine (4-1), which won, 17-15, 15-7, 15-9.

Sean McLaren had 15 kills for Edison (2-2).

El Dorado 3, Valencia 2--David Patten had 43 kills for the visiting Golden Hawks (4-2), who won, 6-15, 15-13, 13-15, 15-11, 15-5.

In Century League baseball:

Canyon 4, El Modena 3--Andy Clay had two hits and two RBIs and Sean Driscol retired the last five batters to pick up his second save for the host Comanches (6-3, 2-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 6, Estancia 1--Junior Todd Merz tossed his second one-hitter and struck out five for Laguna Beach (4-4, 1-1).

In Empire League boys’ golf:

Kennedy 189, El Dorado 197--Junior Peter Whang made five birdies and needed only 12 putts to shoot a four-under 32 for Kennedy (6-1, 1-0) at Lakewood.

In the Orange League:

No. 9 Brea Olinda 184, Fairmont 222--Chris Mores and Chris Heintz shot par 35s for Brea Olinda (4-1, 1-0) at Dad Miller.

In the South Coast League:

No. 4 San Clemente 195, No. 5 Capistrano Valley 199--Robert Chaplain had two birdies and shot par 35 for San Clemente (5-0, 1-0) at Marbella.

In nonleague matches:

No. 10 Marina 371, No. 6 Sunny Hills 403--Sophomore Mike Zaniboni had four birdies and shot two-under 68 for Marina (5-0) in a two-day match at Meadowlark and Los Coyotes. Phillip Chang of Sunny Hills (3-1) had a hole-in-one on the 168-yard sixth hole at Los Coyotes.

No. 2 Santa Margarita 385, Carlsbad 413--Scott Manley shot two-over 75 for Santa Margarita (3-0) at Cota de Caza’s South Course and El Camino.

In South Coast League boys’ swimming:

No. 9 Dana Hills 85, No. 7 Mission Viejo 85--Dana Hills rallied from 14 points down to tie seventh-ranked Mission Viejo. Scott Baer won the 50 freestyle (22.01) and the 100 freestyle (49.22) for Dana Hills (3-0-1). Ryan Kennedy won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly for Mission Viejo.

In South Coast League girls’ swimming:

No. 3 San Clemente 105, No. 8 Capistrano Valley 65--Sarah Jones won the 50-yard and 100 freestyle and Kristin Caverly won the 200 freestyle and individual medley for San Clemente (3-0, 1-0). Jones also swam on two winning relay teams.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

No. 3 Troy 10, No 8 Canyon 8--Brian Noguchi won the final five games to win the final set, 7-5, and lift Troy to the victory. Sophomore Jeffrey Das improved to 24-0 on with a 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 sweep in singles for Troy.
