Horwitz Beats Throw and Glendale Beats Moorpark, 8-7

John Manuel and Jimmy Stone scored on a fielder’s choice by Jon Horwitz in the ninth inning to give Glendale College an 8-7 victory over Moorpark in a Western State Conference interdivisional baseball game on Thursday at Moorpark.

Horwitz, who beat the throw for what would have been an inning-ending double play at first base, had three hits and scored a run to help Glendale (20-3, 11-2 in conference play) win its sixth consecutive game.

Stone had two hits and scored twice for the Vaqueros, who trailed, 6-0, after five innings.

Corey Taillon had two hits, including a three-run triple in the fourth, for Moorpark (5-17-1, 5-8).

Taillon was thrown out trying to steal second to end the game.

Ventura 8, Bakersfield 3--John Poehler’s three-run home run keyed a five-run seventh inning that broke open a WSC interdivisional game for the Pirates (8-13, 4-9) at Ventura.

Cuesta 12, Canyons 4--Nolan LeMar had two hits and scored two runs for the Cougars (9-15-1, 5-8) in a WSC interdivisional defeat at Cuesta.

SOFTBALL

Canyons 6, Citrus 5--Gretchen Pawlak had three hits and scored a run for the Cougars (18-7, 12-2) in a WSC Southern Division game at Canyons.

Moorpark 8, Hancock 1--Mo Acedo had three hits and an RBI in a WSC Northern Division game at Moorpark.

Emily Otineru added two hits and an RBI for Moorpark (11-17, 6-6).

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale 9, Pierce 0--The Brahmas (2-10, 1-8) won only one set in a WSC match at Glendale.

Andy Roland, at No. 1 singles, and Celso Persheona, playing at No. 4 for the Vaqueros, dropped a total of two games in four sets.

Glendale held an 89-40 edge in games.
