Pepperdine lost two of three against San Diego last weekend, but remained two games ahead of the Toreros for first place in the West Coast Conference West Division with six to play.

The Waves (32-14, 19-5 in the WCC), ranked No. 14 by Baseball America, play a nonconference game today at No. 6-ranked Cal State Fullerton, and begin a three-game WCC series Friday at St. Mary’s.

San Diego is 32-16, 17-7.

* Cal State Northridge scored five runs in the first two innings and defeated Long Beach State, 8-3, in a Big West Conference game Sunday at Long Beach.

Bill Murphy (8-4) pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs and two walks for the Matadors (27-19, 5-7). He struck out five. J.T. Stotts had three hits, while Tim Arroyo, Robert Smith and Eric Verbryke each had two RBIs. Verbryke doubled and tripled.

* First baseman Evan Williams of Oak Park High has committed to Chapman University.

BASKETBALL

* Ed Chevalier, former coach at Thousand Oaks High, has been named boys’ coach at Oak Park.

Chevalier, who guided the Lancers to 12 Southern Section playoff appearances in 18 years, replaces Rob Hall, who resigned in February.

Chevalier had a 250-196 record at Thousand Oaks that included four 20-win seasons before he resigned after the 1996-97 season.

Oak Park was 19-9 last season and advanced to a playoff semifinal for the first time.

Chevalier will continue to teach at Thousand Oaks and serve as a walk-on coach at Oak Park.
