Santa Ana Clinches Share of Title
Dustin Wagoner’s two-hitter Tuesday helped Santa Ana defeat visiting Orange Coast, 6-0, and clinch at least a share of the Orange Empire Conference baseball title.
David Fischer had a home run and a double and Aaron Escobedo had two hits to run his hitting streak to 17 games. Santa Ana is 32-9, 19-4.
In other Orange Empire Conference games:
Irvine Valley 7, Cypress 3--Snapping a 16-game losing streak, Irvine Valley (7-32, 2-22) got three hits and three runs scored from Scott Zine and a two-run homer by Cody Whitson. Mike Mattivi held Cypress (28-14, 13-10) to six hits and only one run after the first inning.
Saddleback 9, Golden West 6--Saddleback banged out 14 hits, including three home runs, and Ryan Williams went the final two innings to record his seventh save.
Tony Wright (9-1) went 3 2/3 innings in relief to pick up the victory for the Gauchos (31-10, 15-8), who trailed, 3-2, before scoring five times in the fifth on a two-run home run by Vinnie Valiente and a three-run shot by Josue Lopez to take the lead for good.
Scott Cheo hit a solo home run for Saddleback in the seventh, his 13th of the season.
Chris Carey had three hits and Joe Burgett hit a two-run home run in the sixth to draw the Rustlers within two, at 7-5. Golden West is 14-27, 5-18.
