No. 9 Mater Dei Gets Past Fourth-Ranked Rosary

Christina Clark, Jessica Young and Sharee Zaleski drove in runs, helping ninth-ranked Mater Dei defeat No. 4 Rosary, 3-2, Tuesday in a Serra League softball game at Mile Square Park.

Marissa Becerra (7-3) earned the victory for the Monarchs (14-8, 2-1).

Dana Kenney had two hits for Rosary (18-8, 2-1).

In another Serra League game:

Santa Margarita 9, Lakewood St. Joseph 1--Kathryn White, a junior, pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts for her first victory. Designated hitter Kim May had two hits, four RBIs and one run scored for visiting Santa Margarita (18-6, 3-1).

In the Century League:

No. 1 Foothill 6, El Modena 0--Courtney Fossatti (15-2) pitched a six-hitter and had three hits for visiting Foothill (23-2, 6-0).

Jilian Hartfiel went three for three with an RBI and Jamie Dotson and Kristin Mann each had two-run doubles for the Knights. Norrelle Dickson had three hits and two stolen bases for El Modena (14-9-1, 4-2-1).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 3, La Habra 2--After La Habra (4-3, 11-13) scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score, Sonora won when Codi Goetz walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. The victory kept Sonora (16-10, 5-2) atop the league standings.

In the Garden Grove League:

Rancho Alamitos 3, Garden Grove 1--Julie Cooke (4-2) gave up one hit in five innings and had a RBI single in the first for host Rancho Alamitos (13-8, 7-2).

Kelly Yost went the final two innings to pick up her third save of season, and Jackie Gogan had two hits and an RBI for the Vaqueros.

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 4, Brethren Christian 1--Stephanie Williams struck out 12 and tossed a two-hitter for Calvary Chapel (15-8, 5-2). Williams also ignited the Eagles’ four-run rally in the fifth inning with a triple.

Orange Lutheran 6, Cerritos Valley Christian 0--Laura Miklos (7-5) threw a one-hitter for Orange Lutheran (15-8, 6-1), facing the minimum number of batters and striking out eight.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 2, Savanna 1--Despite a one-hit pitching performance from Katy Perkins, Brea Olinda (12-6, 6-1) needed a run in the seventh inning to break a first-place tie with Savanna (5-2, 15-7). Marjalana Santos and Christin Knobbe each had two hits for the Wildcats.

Valencia 8, Western 0--Michelle Whiteman (12-8) pitched a one-hitter, facing only one batter over the minimum and striking out 12 for the host Tigers (14-10, 4-2). Whiteman and Kim Miller had two hits each.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 8, University 2--Catcher Sarah Watkins had two hits for Costa Mesa (11-7-1, 6-1) and threw out a runner at second to stop a third-inning rally when the score was tied, 1-1. Center fielder Jade Moss added three hits, stole a base and scored twice. Costa Mesa had 13 hits, all singles.

Northwood 9, Corona del Mar 0--Sophomore Allison Lewis allowed only a second-inning single while striking out 10, and Teresa Leyden had three hits and two RBIs for the host Timberwolves (12-9, 7-0). Casey Bunney had the lone hit for Corona del Mar (12-10, 4-3).

In the Sea View League:

Aliso Niguel 7, Irvine 2--Amanda Samonte (6-5) earned the win, Chezare Sievers had two doubles and three runs scored and Erin Wallace had three hits, including an RBI triple, for Aliso Niguel (13-11, 3-2). Erika Peterson had two hits for host Irvine (13-11, 3-3).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 8, Loa Alamitos 0--Leah Glenn was three for four with two runs scored and two stolen bases for Edison (10-9, 3-4). Scarlet Neal’s two-run triple was part of a five-run third inning for the Chargers.

No. 2 Fountain Valley 1, Huntington Beach 0--Jackie Brown pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven, and drove in the winning run in the fourth.

Kirin Kumar scored the winning run for the Barons (22-5, 7-0), who have won 15 games in a row.
