Kennedy Holds Off Sylmar

It wasn’t Adam Geery’s prettiest performance. But it was enough for Kennedy High.

The junior right-hander walked seven and survived three errors in an 8-5 Valley Mission League victory over Sylmar on Wednesday at Sylmar.

Kennedy (19-9, 10-2 in league play) avenged consecutive losses to the Spartans to open league play and remained in a first-place tie with San Fernando.

San Fernando and Kennedy will meet at Birmingham High on May 15.

Geery (6-1) was spotted a 7-1 lead after three innings and struck out 12.

Bobby Phillips had three hits and Chad Shaw had three runs batted in for Kennedy.

Alex Chavez was four for four for Sylmar (16-7, 8-4).

San Fernando 5, Monroe 0--Abraham Gonzalez, Jess Moreno and Miguel Gonzales combined on a one-hitter for the Tigers (21-6, 10-2) in a Valley Mission League game at Monroe.

Royal 7, Simi Valley 4--Chris Dusablon’s two-run double broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth for the Highlanders (17-7, 5-4) in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

Moorpark 11, Newbury Park 1--Ryan Paul hit a grand slam to highlight an eight-run third inning for the Musketeers in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

Lancaster 15, Littlerock 5--Jason Anderson and Josh Pratt each had three of the Eagles’ 15 hits in a Golden League game at Lancaster.

Art Ortiz of Lancaster (18-4-1, 11-1) hit his region-leading 11th home run.

Quartz Hill 13, Highland 7--Brian Chavez, Gavin Brandon and Dustin Petzold each had two hits and two RBIs in a Golden League victory for the Rebels (13-9, 9-3) at Quartz Hill.

Crespi 14, St. Bernard 2--Dale Legaspi struck out seven in five innings and the Celts (13-9) won a nonleague game at St. Bernard.

SOFTBALL

Rio Mesa 3, Oxnard 0--Sharon Muniz had a two-run single in a Pacific View League victory for the Spartans (16-6, 9-0) at Rio Mesa. Chanel Tripp (14-3) struck out 10 in five innings for Rio Mesa.

Montclair Prep 6, Crossroads 4--Roxie Catalan’s two-run double in the 11th inning helped visiting Montclair Prep (11-6, 6-0) remain undefeated in Delphic League play.

Catalan’s run-scoring single in the sixth tied the score, 4-4.

GOLF

Pacific View League individual tournament--Kyle Dowden of Camarillo shot a three-under-par 69 and finished with a two-day total of 144 at Soule Park Golf Course.

Camarillo freshman Colin Wilcox was second at 145. The top three advanced to the Southern Section championships.

Dowden, a sophomore, reeled off 15 pars and three birdies for a bogey-free round on Wednesday.

Pacific League tournament--Michael Park of Crescenta Valley shot a two-round, two-over-par 146 to earn the league title at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.
