No. 3 Marina Shares Title With No. 2 Barons

Drew Wilson had 25 kills and setter Beau Peters had 76 assists and seven blocks Friday to help host Marina, ranked third in the county, defeat second-ranked Fountain Valley, 15-17, 15-12, 15-12, 15-8, in a Sunset League boys’ volleyball match.

The win gave the Vikings (18-3, 9-1 in league) a share of their fourth consecutive Sunset championship. Steffin Rangel had 24 kills and 16 blocks.

Nate Hagstrom had 36 kills for league co-champ Fountain Valley (11-3, 9-1), the top-ranked team in Southern Section Division I. Marina is No. 5 in Division II.

In the Century League:

No. 1 Foothill 3, Villa Park 1--Ryan Burgess had 48 assists and Matt Daniels had 25 kills for visiting Foothill (13-1, 10-0), which won, 15-10, 15-4, 13-15, 15-3.

In the Serra League:

No. 8 Mater Dei 3, Servite 0--Jon Daze had 18 kills and teammate Joe Groff had 11 to help Mater Dei (22-7, 4-2) to a 15-7, 15-6, 17-15 win.

In the Foothill Invitational softball tournament:

No. 1 Foothill 6, Pacifica 0--The host Knights won the championship game as Courtney Fossatti (16-2) struck out eight and Tiffany Hass went three for three with two RBIs and scored three runs.

In the Serra League:

No. 9 Mater Dei 4, No. 8 Santa Margarita 3--Christina Clark’s two-out, seventh-inning double drove in the winning run for the host Monarchs (16-8, 3-1).

In the Golden West League boy’s tennis finals:

Santa Ana sweeps--Jose Bahena won the singles title for the Saints, while teammates Ed Reyes and Oscar Sanchez won the doubles.

In the Serra League finals:

Buchanan, Poonian-Shires win--Patrick Buchanan of Servite defeated teammate Jonathan Sanchez, 6-4, 6-2, to claim the singles title. Naveen Poonian and Matt Shires of Santa Margarita defeated Rich Mauban and Marcus Martinez of Servite, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to win the doubles championship.
