Edison Earns Title Despite Injury to Poston; Esperanza Girls Win

The high school sprinting career of Edison senior Darryl Poston, who has committed to play football at USC, might have ended Friday night.

Poston, a favorite in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, aggravated a groin injury while competing in the long jump at the Sunset League track and field finals at Huntington Beach High and had to scratch from that event.

Then, shortly after getting out of the starting blocks in the 100-meter dash, he pulled up. And later he scratched from the 200.

If he recovers, Poston could run a leg of the Chargers’ 400-meter relay next week.

The Chargers never skipped a beat, though, taking the team title by 20 points over Esperanza. Poston’s teammate, Chuckie Linman, went on to win the 100 and 200 meter, ran on the winning 400 relay team and also stepped in for Poston to anchor the Chargers’ winning 1,600-meter relay. Charger Denny Flanagan won the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles and ran legs on the winning relays.

Nick Arcinaga led a Fountain Valley sweep of the first three places in the 800 and also took the title in the 1,600, helping the Barons finish third.

Brian Ruziecki of Huntington Beach won the shotput and discus.

Esperanza ran away with the girls’ team title, besting second-place Marina by 89 points. Edison was third.
