Monarchs Clinch Serra Title With 7-3 Victory
Mater Dei clinched the Serra League baseball title Saturday, defeating Bellflower St. John Bosco, 7-3, at Mater Dei.
Mater Dei junior Warren Chenier pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts to improve his record to 6-0.
Center fielder C.J. Cook was two for three with a double and a two-run home run for the Monarchs (21-3, 9-1). Right fielder Daniel Perales was two for three with four RBIs.
St. John Bosco (8-18, 2-8) won the league title last season but is in last place this season.
In another Serra League game:
Servite 4, Santa Margarita 0--Steve Kahn allowed three hits and struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings for Servite (11-10-1, 4-6), and Dan Strough recorded a strikeout with the bases loaded to save the Friars’ eighth victory in their last nine games.
In the Sunset League:
Fountain Valley 2, No. 8 Edison 1--Joe Charboneau scored on a double by Gilbert Gonzales in the second inning, and Mark Wishek scored on a sacrifice fly in the third to give the Barons (16-8, 8-5) a 2-0 lead. Edison is 15-7-1 overall, 8-5 in league.
In a nonleague doubleheader:
No. 3 La Quinta 10-3, Tustin 5-6--Catcher Arnulfo Arroyo had three hits, two runs and three RBIs and left fielder Dennis Watt had three hits, one run and two RBIs in the two games for La Quinta (22-3).
