Corona del Mar Earns Its First Softball Playoff Berth Corona del Mar defeated University, 8-0, in a Pacific Coast League game Monday and earned a spot in the Southern Section softball playoffs for the first time in school history.

Alissa Zoelle pitched a five-hitter, recorded seven assists on defense, drove in a run and scored another for visiting Corona del Mar (13-10, 6-3). Megan Bunney tripled, doubled, drove in a run and scored a run for the Sea Kings.

In other Pacific Coast League games:

Laguna Beach 3, Costa Mesa 0--Jocelyn Turner pitched a three-hitter and Hillary Friedman had an RBI triple and a run for host Laguna Beach (12-9, 5-4).

Northwood 11, Estancia 0 (6, mercy)--Allison Lewis (14-9) pitched her fifth no-hitter for Northwood (14-9, 9-0), which clinched the league title Thursday.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 1, Sunny Hills 0 (18)--Lisa Jackson scored from second base on a throwing error to give visiting Troy (16-7, 6-2) the win. Emily Hively struck out 18 for Troy and Shannon Deutschman had 14 strikeouts for Sunny Hills (10-11, 4-4) in a game that was resumed in the 15th inning after an umpire had to leave the game on Tuesday.

In Serra League baseball:

No. 2 Mater Dei 15, Servite 8--Richard Mercado homered, doubled, singled and drove in five runs and Ken Chicone had two doubles and four RBIs for visiting Mater Dei (22-3, 10-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Corona del Mar 7, Costa Mesa 2--Billy Eagle had a homer, double and two RBIs and Eric Snell pitched a four-hitter for host Corona del Mar (16-8, 11-3).

In the Empire League tennis finals:

Seo-Van Smaalen advance--The seventh-seeded doubles team of Danny Seo and Steven Van Smaalen of Cypress defeated second-seeded James Skuratofsky and Loc Tai of Loara, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the tournament semifinals.

Fifth-seed Stanley Kuan of El Dorado beat third-seeded Navin Kumar of Cypress, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the singles semifinals.
