Barrett Claims Two Titles in Finals

Jeff Barrett of Nordhoff High won the boys’ 200- and 100-yard freestyle titles with times of 1:42.06 and 46.71 seconds Thursday in the Southern Section Division IV swim championships at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Brett Shiflett, an Oaks Christian freshman, timed 1:52.48 to win the girls’ 200 freestyle free. She also won the 100 backstroke in 59.44.

Peter McVey of Quartz Hill finished third in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Buckley’s William Chae placed second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle.

Cerritos won the boys’ competition with 273.5 points. Brea Olinda won the girls’ division with 213 points.

Division II preliminaries--Maureen Farrell of Alemany timed 55.06 seconds in the 100 backstroke to break the meet record of 55.56 she set last year. The finals are Saturday.

She also had the best time in the 50 freestyle (23.96) and swam the backstroke leg for Alemany’s winning 200 medley relay (1:51.72) and anchored the teams’s winning 400 freestyle relay (3:40.00).

David Deloria of Hart posted a career-best time of 1:57.96 to qualify fourth in the 200 individual medley and he anchored the Indians’ 200 freestyle relay team that qualified third in 1:29.44.

Alexis Sheridan of Crescenta Valley qualified third in the 500 freestyle (5:03.05), fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:54.93) and anchored the Falcons’ third-place 400 freestyle relay (3:41.54) and sixth-place 200 freestyle relay (1:42.93).
