Top-Seeded Jones in Semifinals
No. 1-seeded singles player Matt Jones of El Camino Real High and the top-seeded doubles team of Alex Leb and Peter Shirley of Palisades advanced Tuesday to the semifinals in the City Section boys’ tennis championships at Balboa Sports Complex in Encino.
Jones defeated Kiril Mikhalov of Van Nuys, 6-2, 6-1, and beat No. 8 Calvin Chan of Cleveland, 6-1, 6-2.
Jones will play No. 5 Reyniere Roxas of Carson, who defeated Jared Drucker of Cleveland, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 4 Norman Tam of Belmont, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
No. 2-seeded James Magsino of El Camino Real advanced with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Juan Hernandez of Marshall and a 7-5, 6-4 victory over No. 7-seeded Giancarlo Cava of University.
No. 6 Nima Roshan of Granada Hills advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Anthony Parr of Dorsey and a 7-6, 3-6, 6-0 victory over No. 3 David Keyes of University.
The No. 3 doubles team of Anand Murthy and Brad Steinberg of Granada Hills will play No. 2 Ron Esguerra and Nick Noa of Carson in the semifinals.
Murthy and Steinberg defeated No. 6 Stan Kosynsk and Soheil Safii of Palisades, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Esguerra and Noa defeated unseeded Adam Kent and Michael Kim of Chatsworth, 6-0, 6-1.
Kent and Kim upset No. 7 Edmond Gandela and Warren Tseng of Marshall in the round of 16 last week.
Leb and Shirley will face No. 4 Shawn Flynn and Nick Kogan of El Camino Real.
Flynn and Kogan advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 5 Sam Pogosian and Arthur Ternersesian of Monroe.
