Capistrano Valley Wins Flip, Gets Home Game

Fountain Valley gets a chance at redemption Friday when it plays Capistrano Valley in a Southern Section Division I baseball quarterfinal.

The Cougars, who won a coin toss Wednesday and host the 3:15 p.m. game, defeated the Barons, 2-1, last season in the second round en route to winning the division title.

Second-seeded Esperanza also won a coin toss and plays host to Fontana Miller in another quarterfinal.

In Division II, Trabuco Hills plays host to Irvine, third-seeded La Mirada is at Edison and second-seeded Mater Dei plays La Crescenta Crescenta Valley at 7 p.m. at Stengel Field in Glendale, across the street from Glendale College.

Cypress will play host to top-seeded Westlake Village Westlake in Division III. Elsewhere in the division, Santa Margarita plays host to third-seeded El Dorado, and second-seeded West Torrance is at Laguna Hills.

In Division IV, Costa Mesa plays at La Verne Bonita and second-seeded La Quinta plays at Ridgecrest Burroughs. In Division V, Whittier Christian plays host to San Pedro Mary Star, and Los Angeles Baptist is at fourth-seeded Calvary Chapel.

Villa Park swimming Coach John Carcich has announced his resignation.

Carcich, who also resigned as the boys’ water polo coach at the end of the season, is leaving to pursue other interests.

Carcich, who played water polo at Villa Park in the mid-1980s, coached swimming for two years, girls’ water polo for five years and boys’ water polo for two seasons.

Rancho Alamitos’ Jami Weddle and Foothill’s Courtney Fossatti are top players in the North-South All-Star softball game at 6:30 p.m. June 5 at Cal State Fullerton.

Two Irvine High girls’ water polo players have signed with four-year colleges, Vaquero Coach Scott Hinman said. Mary Beth Cox has signed with San Jose State, and Nicole Lorrimer has signed with UC Davis.

Cox was a two-time All Sea View League selection and was a third-team All-Southern Section Division I member. Lorrimer was also a two-time All Sea View League pick and a first-team All-Southern Section Division I selection.
