Division III

Norte Vista 3, Calabasas 2--The Coyotes (19-9) fell short in their bid to meet Westlake in the semifinals, losing on the road.

Division V

St. Bonaventure 2, Paraclete 1--Josh Berrington has been in the shadows of an ace, but the senior right-hander finally enjoyed the moment he had been waiting for.

Berrington allowed one run in six innings and teamed with ace Gilbert Infante to lead St. Bonaventure in a quarterfinal at Somis Park.

Brandon Mascorro’s single scored Joey Tissler with the winning run in the sixth inning.

Berrington (6-3) allowed five hits and one earned run. After he allowed a leadoff single in the seventh inning, Infante was summoned and earned a save in his first relief appearance of the season.

“When you don’t get much playing time, you always want to be the one out there in the big situation,” Berrington said. “To have been out there is great. I loved the moment.”

The Seraphs (18-8) advanced to the semifinals for the third consecutive year. Each time, the Seraphs have lost to the eventual Division V champion.

The Seraphs took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on Evan Binkley’s run-scoring single off Doug Morrow (2-2).

The Spirits (13-12), who were shut out by Berrington, 8-0, earlier this season, tied the score, 1-1, when Matt Hickman’s single scored Tommy Caton in the sixth inning.

Infante will start Tuesday, Coach Dennis Johnson said. But the work by Berrington, which included an outing against Oak Park in which he retired 12 consecutive hitters, gives the Seraphs two effective starters.

“Berrington is an example of hard work paying off,” Johnson said.
