In Good Hands With Boyle

As a sure-handed wide receiver for Woodland Hills El Camino Real High, Jeremy Boyle expects footballs to be thrown his way. As a free safety, he expects just the opposite.

So Boyle, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior, was surprised as anyone when he intercepted a school-record four passes Friday in El Camino Real’s 41-0 nonleague victory over Van Nuys.

“It was kind of weird,” Boyle said. “I was thinking, ‘I guess they like throwing to me a lot.”’

In the first quarter, Boyle picked off a pass that was tipped by a Van Nuys receiver. In the second quarter, he intercepted a ball thrown by a Van Nuys receiver on a trick play.

He picked off another on an attempt over the middle in the third quarter and settled under a desperation throw in the fourth.

Boyle, who intercepted two passes against Van Nuys last season, is one of 18 starters back from a team that lost six games by seven points or fewer and finished 2-8 last season. The experience has paid off.

El Camino Real has come from behind twice, beating Jefferson in its opener before losing to Sylmar when Boyle, who averages 12 tackles a game, missed the second half because of injury.

El Camino Real plays Calabasas in an intersectional game Friday. Will Calabasas throw at Boyle?

‘I hope they do,’ he said.

Electrifying presence: Jordan is 0-2 entering its game Friday at Los Angeles Wilson, but the Bulldogs might have the most electrifying performer in the City Section in Dell Hester.

The 5-foot-5, 175-pound senior rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown, caught five passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown in a 46-42 loss to Manual Arts last week.

“He’s one of the greatest improvisers I have ever seen,” Jordan Coach Doi Johnson said. “He creates so much on his own, it’s eerie.”

Bright beginning: An overflow crowd of 5,000 is expected Friday night at Carson (3-0) for the Colts’ game against Los Angeles Locke (1-2), the first night game on campus in school history. Carson’s booster club, the Los Angeles Unified School District and the city of Carson helped pay for the lights at the refurbished stadium. There will be a ceremony and fireworks show at halftime.

Marquee matchups: Defending City champion Wilmington Banning (0-3) could be looking at a winless nonconference record unless the Pilots upset fourth-ranked Los Angeles Loyola (3-0) in an intersectional game tonight at Gardena High.

Dorsey’s game at Oakland McClymonds in Week 2 was canceled after the terrorist attacks, but the Dons (2-1) play host to Oakland Skyline (2-1) Friday night.

In other noteworthy intersectional games, Manual Arts (2-1) visits ninth-ranked Corona Centennial (3-0) Friday night, and Harbor City Narbonne (2-1) travels to Clovis (3-1) on Saturday.
