Louisville Holds Off Colorado State, 7-2

Dewayne White made 12 tackles and forced a fumble and Anthony Floyd intercepted a pass and blocked a punt as Louisville defeated Colorado State, 7-2, Thursday night in a nonconference game at Louisville, Ky.

The Cardinals (5-1) overcame a mistake-prone offense by holding the Rams (2-3) to only 148 total yards and 11 first downs. Colorado State failed to score a touchdown for the first time since a 24-0 loss to Air Force in 1997 and had its lowest yardage total since 1993.

Ozzie Simmons, one of the first black All-American college football players, has died. He was 87.

Simmons, who taught physical education for 38 years in Chicago’s public schools, died Sept. 26 of complications from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases in a Chicago nursing home.

Simmons played halfback for Iowa from 1934-36, was an All-American in 1935 and was selected to the All-Big Ten team in 1934 and ’35.

Linebacker E.J. Henderson, Maryland’s leading tackler, has lost his starting position after being charged with a misdemeanor DWI offense. He was cited by campus police this week.... Air Force will play the remainder of its home schedule at Falcon Stadium with fans in attendance. Last week, academy officials said it was possible that games could be played before 52,000 empty seats if retaliatory strikes were made by the United States or its allies in wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
