Atlanta Manager Bobby Cox might bring back Greg Maddux on three days’ rest to start in Game 4 at Turner Field.

Maddux pitched seven innings in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Randy Johnson in Game 1 at Bank One Ballpark, but threw only 94 pitches.

Moreover, he was working on six days’ rest because the Braves swept the Houston Astros in the division series.

The four-time Cy Young award winner has been effective on short rest in the past.

“We’re going to play it game to game,” Cox said. “I can’t even tell you what would sway me.”

The outcome of Game 3 might.

Curt Schilling is scheduled to start for the Diamondbacks on Friday when the series shifts to Atlanta.

The 22-game winner had two complete-game victories in the division series, and Cox might feel compelled to turn to Maddux if the Braves trail, 2-1, in the best-of-seven series.

Kevin Millwood, added to the championship series roster, is expected to start against the Diamondbacks’ Albie Lopez in Game 4 if Maddux does not.

“He’s ready to go,” Cox said of Maddux. “We don’t count intentional walks and pitchouts on those pitch counts, so he was really under 90. He had six days’ rest going in, so he’ll be ready. You bet.”
