Smith Breaks Pasadena Record

Sophomore running back Jonathan Smith broke a 30-year-old school rushing record and high-powered Pasadena College defeated Mt. San Antonio, 46-27, Saturday to remain undefeated in the Mission Conference.

Smith, who was out of football a year ago and working in a law firm, carried the ball 26 times for 317 yards and scored on runs of 26, one and 84 yards for host Pasadena (6-0, 2-0). He broke Albert Youngblood’s 1971 record of 316 yards on his second touchdown run with 2 minutes 28 seconds remaining.

“I have got a great [offensive line],” said Smith, a transfer from East L.A. College who has 845 yards and 10 touchdowns. “They always try to provide for me. In my mind, once I got past the line of scrimmage, I say to myself, ‘I’ve got to get to the end zone.”’

Pasadena quarterback Nathan Chandler completed 18 of 29 passes for 200 yards and threw three touchdown passes to Octavius Spencer. The Lancers have scored in 33 consecutive quarters and are averaging 43.8 points.

Pasadena Coach Tom Maher earned his first victory in six seasons against Mt. SAC (3-3, 2-2). Maher spent six seasons as the Mounties’ offensive coordinator under current coach, Bill Fisk.

Mt. SAC quarterback Greg Valenzuela threw for 301 yards and a touchdown.
