Kings Place Webber on the Injured List

The Sacramento Kings placed all-star forward Chris Webber on the injured list Tuesday because of a sprained left ankle, the team said.

Webber, who will miss at least Sacramento’s first five games, was injured during an exhibition game against the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 14.

X-rays showed no broken bones, but Webber has a high ankle sprain that may keep him out two to four more weeks, the Kings said.

Chicago Bull forward Eddie Robinson will not need immediate surgery on his left big toe and might miss only two weeks.

When Robinson complained of pain Friday and a break in the toe was discovered, the prognosis was for surgery, which would have sidelined the Bulls’ top free-gent acquisition for up to two months.

Tests Monday confirmed that Robinson has a non-acute fracture of his toe, but the Bulls say the injury is not as bad as first feared and surgery would be postponed until the end of the season.

Robinson said he hopes to miss no more than seven or eight games, which would mean a mid-November return.

That’s a huge relief for the Bulls, who signed Robinson away from Charlotte with a five-year, $31.2-million contract in the off-season.

“I’m very excited to hear it’s not going to be that long of a period of time,” Robinson said in Chicago. “In the beginning I didn’t think it would be [two months], because it wasn’t hurting that bad.”

The Bulls will treat the injury by immobilizing Robinson’s foot and by finding him better shoes. Robinson was also scheduled to see a foot specialist.

Jessica De Rubbio’s seat to watch Michael Jordan in his comeback game cost $101,300, but she won’t be getting a bill anytime soon.

The courtside seat at Madison Square Garden is one of two belonging to director Spike Lee. It was auctioned off to benefit the Widow’s and Children’s Fund set up by the New York Fire Department.

The fund selected 12-year-old Jessica, daughter of firefighter David De Rubbio, killed Sept. 11 after the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. The 38-year-old De Rubbio was from Engine Co. 226 in Brooklyn.

The auction winner has insisted on remaining anonymous.

“I just thought about what I could do to have the most impact,” said Lee, a big New York Knick fan. “And then I had to clear it with my wife. It’s her seat.”

Charlotte Hornet forward George Lynch underwent surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot, the team said.

He is expected to miss about eight weeks.

Lynch was acquired from the Philadelphia 76ers last week as part of an eight-player trade that sent Derrick Coleman to the 76ers.

He had the surgery to repair a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his foot at Carolinas Medical Center. The operation was performed by Dr. James Sebold, a foot and ankle specialist.

Lynch injured the foot during Philadelphia’s run to the NBA Finals last season and had surgery shortly afterward.

He missed the preseason while recovering from the procedure, and after undergoing his physical examination with Charlotte on Friday, team doctors decided he needed additional surgery.

The New Jersey Nets signed veteran forward Reggie Slater.

Slater, a seven-year veteran, played last season for the Minnesota Timberwolves, averaging 4.6 points and 3.4 rebounds.

To make room, the Nets placed forward Brian Scalabrine, a rookie from USC, on the injured list because of a broken foot.
