Most would not use the words “lethargic” and “unfocused” to describe Southern California’s top-ranked team. But although Long Beach Poly easily defeated Narbonne, 28-6, Friday night in an intersectional game before 3,000 at Veterans Stadium, that’s how Jackrabbit Coach Raul Lara said his team played.

“We were hyped up at the beginning of game, but we just lost focus, and started making bad penalties,” agreed senior tight end Marcedes Lewis, who scored two touchdowns for Poly (2-0), including an eight-yard pass from Leon Jackson with 11:35 to go in the third quarter for the Jackrabbits’ final score.

Narbonne (1-1) avoided the shutout with 14 seconds left when senior Donell Wheaton scored on a 27-yard reception from David Galluci. Wheaton, Narbonne’s top player, had three catches for 62 yards.
