Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 27, Lawndale Leuzinger 24--The Mustangs stopped running back Kava Makalo inches short of the goal line on the final play to win a Bay League opener at Leuzinger High.

The Olympians (1-2-1) drove to Mira Costa’s one-yard line with 12 seconds left but failed to score on runs by Steven Singleton and Makalo.

Peter Dobush completed 15 of 22 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns for the Mustangs (4-0), who lost to Newhall Hart in the Division III championship game last season.

Nick Haley caught five passes for 103 yards for Mira Costa and Michael Okwo rushed for 128 yards in 20 carries, including a 29-yard touchdown run that gave the Mustangs a 20-16 lead on the first drive of the second half. Devin Adair had four receptions for 71 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown reception that gave Mira Costa a 27-16 lead with 8:01 remaining..

Victor McClendon rushed for 153 yards in 28 carries for Leuzinger, including a three-yard touchdown run that capped a 12-play, 92-yard drive and pulled the Olympians to within three points with 3:46 left in the game. Singleton added 103 yard in six carries for Leuzinger, including an 82-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Paul Sekona rushed for 86 yards and one touchdown in 12 carries, and Brandon Ford added 64 yards in four carries for Leuzinger, which led, 16-14, at halftime.
