Woman, 28, Dies After Boston Marathon Run

A 28-year-old woman who ran in the Boston Marathon to raise money for cancer patients died Wednesday, two days after collapsing near the end of the race.

Cynthia Lucero was one of 150 runners raising money for the state chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society among the 17,000 marathoners Monday. She is the second fatality in the marathon’s 106-year history.

According to a friend, Carole Slipowitz, Lucero stopped near Cleveland Circle, not far from the finish line, saying she felt dehydrated. She grew wobbly kneed and fainted.

By the time she was transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Lucero was nearly in a coma. Her life support systems were removed Wednesday night.

A week after fading at the Masters, Davis Love III shot a nine-under-par 62 to take the first-round lead in the WorldCom Classic at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Billy Andrade opened with a 64, his best round in 13 trips to Hilton Head. Phil Mickelson joined David Frost, Lee Janzen and Billy Mayfair at 64, and Greg Norman and Angel Cabrera shot 65s.

John Daly withdrew from the tournament when he was six over through 15 holes. He cited a wrist injury.

Cristie Kerr and Sara Sanders, both winless on the LPGA Tour, shot six-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the Longs Drugs Challenge at Lincoln, Calif.

Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson was three strokes back along with Julie Piers and Australia’s Jane Crafter. Defending champion Se Ri Pak opened with a 73.

Monica Seles was upset by qualifier Stephanie Foretz, 6-4, 7-6 (6), in the Family Circle Cup at Charleston, S.C.

Foretz, a Frenchwoman ranked No. 109, reached her first top-level WTA Tour tournament quarterfinal. She will next play No. 7-seeded Sandrine Testud, who defeated Jill Craybas, 6-3, 6-2.

In other action, top-seeded Jennifer Capriati defeated Alexandra Fusai of France, 6-3, 7-5, and 13th-seeded Amanda Coetzer got past Paola Suarez, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Andy Roddick was knocked out of the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco, losing to Tommy Haas of Germany, 6-3, 6-2.

In the quarterfinals, Haas will play second-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero, who advanced after Marcelo Rios retired trailing, 6-2, 2-0.

Tim Henman won his third-round match against Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Henman will face Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson, who defeated Andrei Pavel, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.

A Towson, Md., jury ordered two women to pay Baltimore Raven linebacker Ray Lewis $5,000 each, deciding that their assault and battery lawsuit against the NFL star was filed in bad faith.

Sherita Williams and Catrice Parker Hill sued Lewis for $6 million, claiming he punched Hill in the face and hit Williams on the shoulder during a fight at a bar in 1999. The fight started when a Lewis family friend got into an argument with the two women.

Jurors said there was no evidence to support the women’s claim.

FIFA’s general secretary Michel Zen-Ruffinen has started legal action for defamation of character against the North and Central American and Caribbean soccer federation, the world soccer governing body said.

FIFA said Zen-Ruffinen had instructed a New York law firm to start proceedings against CONCACAF because the federation had failed to retract allegations against him by an April 15 deadline.

Basketball

Caron Butler is headed to the NBA after a sophomore season in which he led Connecticut to the NCAA tournament final eight and was co-Big East Conference player of the year.

The forward averaged 20.3 points and 7.5 rebounds, leading the Huskies (27-7) to the Big East tournament championship.

Kerry Earnhardt, driving a car co-owned by Terry Bradshaw, will start in the Winston Cup race at Talladega, Ala., in October.... Busch Series rookie Johnny Sauter took the pole for the Aaron’s 312, turning a lap at 188.764 mph on the 2.66-mile Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
