Frankel Tries for Repeat

Share

A little more than 12 months after taking the $75,000 Wickerr Handicap with Thady Quill, trainer Bobby Frankel will send out Shibboleth and Fateful Dream in the one-mile turf race.

Nearly six weeks after winning the Jaipur Handicap at Belmont Park, Shibboleth finished fifth of seven as the 1-2 favorite in the Poker.

A 5-year-old son of Danzig owned and bred by Juddmonte Farms, Shibboleth will break from the rail under jockey Patrick Valenzuela.

Fateful Dream, a 5-year-old Distant View horse owned by Ed Gann, is a specialist at the Wickerr distance. He has collected four of his five victories at a mile on the grass, and he should benefit from his last race. He finished third July 7 at Hollywood Park in his first start in over a year. Kent Desormeaux, aboard for two of his three victories in the U.S., has the mount.

The horse to beat is Special Ring. The 5-year-old Nureyev gelding has won three of his last four for owner William Preston and trainer Julio Canani.

Race of the day: Del Mar’s fourth is a 1 1/16-mile turf route for $50,000 fillies and mares.

Who’s hot: Rock Of Gibraltar. The 3-year-old won his sixth consecutive Group I race when he took the Sussex Stakes this week in England.

Who’s not: Global Gait. Purchased for a figure reported to be in the high six figures last year as a Triple Crown hopeful, the son of Concern has lost six in a row since joining Bob Baffert’s stable and has not finished higher than fourth in any race. He’s entered in today’s eighth at Del Mar, a $40,000 claimer.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Sagle, Demon In The Rough and Alessandria in the third, Lookn Mighty Fine, River Valley Lass, Land Tax and Kernitre in the fourth and singling Unfurl The Flag in the fifth.
