West Anaheim Staves Off Elimination in Regional
Josh Vitters pitched a three-hitter, striking out 12 and walking none, as the Little League team from West Anaheim (ages 11 and 12) defeated Nevada, 1-0, Wednesday at the six-team Western Region tournament at Al Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino.
West Anaheim (1-2), which has scored one run in each of its three games, meets Northern California’s representative, Aptos (3-0), in the final game of pool play at 8 tonight.
The teams with the best records after four games will meet in semifinal games at 5 and 8 p.m. Sunday. The winner of the championship game, which will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, advances to the Little League World Series, Aug. 16-25 in Williamsport, Pa.
* The Senior League baseball team from San Pedro (ages 15-16) defeated Arizona, 10-9, on Wednesday to win the four-team Western Regional tournament in San Jose.
San Pedro had defeated Arizona, 10-1, on Wednesday to force Thursday’s game. San Pedro advances to the World Series, which begins Sunday in Bangor, Maine.
* The Conejo Valley Little League team defeated Yorba Hills, 5-3 and 5-4, to sweep the best-of-three championship series and win the Southern California championship for 9- and 10-year-olds.
