Retired Schoolteachers Enjoy Generous Benefits
While it is lamentable that the nation is facing a shortage of qualified teachers in our public schools, I don’t believe we should be too hasty in enacting legislation such as that referred to in a Nov. 30 letter. I have worked with the California public school system for 15 years, and while teachers who begin and end their careers in the system do not get Social Security, their retirement benefits are, for the most part, superior to private industry. In fact, teachers with 30 years’ service can retire at over 70% of their highest years’ earnings, and that retirement is index-linked. In addition, California public employees are also provided with very attractive health and benefit packages while working and at retirement.
I know a number of retired public employees who are receiving three or more retirements, one of which is Social Security.
