Rain Forces Postponement of City Tennis Semifinals

The City Section girls’ tennis individual tournament will continue today, weather permitting.

The singles and doubles semifinals, scheduled to take place Monday at Balboa Sports Complex in Encino, were postponed because of rain.

Top-seeded Dianne Matias of Carson will play fourth-seeded Canna Furuta of Granada Hills in one semifinal. Carson’s Judith De Vera, the defending singles champion and seeded second, will play third-seeded Christine Dao of Granada Hills in the other.

In doubles, the top-seeded team of Jasmine Reed and Madison Sellers of Palisades plays the fourth-seeded team of Becky Bort-Mills and Charilyn Watkins of Westchester. Two Granada Hills teams will play in the other semifinal when No. 2-seeded Maria Cardenas and Tracey Takeshita take on No. 6-seeded Jessica Linder and Roxanne Plata.

The championship matches are Wednesday at Balboa Sports Complex.

The final day in the Long Beach Millikan boys’ soccer tournament was postponed until Dec. 23 because of rain Monday.

The remaining games include the final between La Puente Nogales and Long Beach Wilson, ranked No. 2 and No. 7 in the Southland by The Times.

Quarterback Richard Irvin of Pasadena Muir, one of the leading passers in the state, has committed to Tulane. Irvin was chosen to participate in the CaliFlorida Bowl on Jan. 4 at Mount San Antonio College.

Van Nuys senior outside hitter Hala Hadawar, who led the City Section in kills, has been selected the section’s girls’ volleyball player of the year.

Hadawar led Van Nuys (31-3) to its second consecutive City championship.

David Bessler of Van Nuys was chosen coach of the year.

Christina Zdenek, a 5-foot-9 guard from West Hills Chaminade, has committed to Utah State.

She averaged 21 points, four steals and three assists as a junior, when she was co-most valuable player of the Mission League.

Golfer Neno Boonyaplanun of Irvine University has signed with UC Irvine.

He was the Pacific Coast League champion last season and won the L.A. City Championship last spring.
