This 230-page book is a compilation of brief personal stories from Herschel Nissenson, former Associated Press national college football editor and ESPN “College GameDay” researcher, who now writes for College and Pro Football Weekly.

The book is softcover, and the material is soft. That’s not to say some of Nissenson’s anecdotes aren’t entertaining. An example: “One year, Bear Bryant filed a lawsuit against the NCAA’s attempt to cut coaching staffs. Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer was asked to predict the outcome. ‘Let me get this straight,’ he said. ‘Bear Bryant is suing the NCAA in an Alabama court where the judge is a graduate of the Alabama law school. Don’t ask me who is going to win or lose, just give me the point spread.”’

The book came out earlier this year and apparently spawned similar ones with short, random items about college football. There’s “Tales of the Tennessee Vols,” “Tales From the Gator Swamp” and “Tales From the Nebraska Sidelines.”

The Nebraska book, a recent release, was written by Don “Fox” Bryant, former longtime Cornhusker sports information director. As one might expect, there’s nothing about Lawrence Phillips and any other Cornhuskers who have embarrassed the program. What you get is plenty about legendary coaches Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne. And lots about some of the great Cornhusker players. This is a book Nebraska fans will enjoy.
